In The Lottery story the setting was a in a little town of about 300. In the Simpsons episode the civilization is bigger than the Lottery town, the city of Springfield is a middle-size city. The tradition that was being practiced in the lottery consisted of killing a person in for of sacrifice in order to have a good growing season and a prosperous harvest. The tradition of the Whacking day consisted on bit snakes to death to commemorate the funder of Springfield. Both the Lottery and Whacking day consisted in making a hash act as part of the tradition or ritual. In the Lottery all people of the town were in favor or just “okay” with the Lottery except Tess. In The whacking day Springfield was okay with this tradition except Lisa and Barry white who thought that this act was cruel to the snakes. The difference between these two is that in the lottery, Tess started as being I favor of the lottery and at the end changed her mind, on the other side Lissa and Barry White where against the Whacking Day since the beginning. The main theme of the Lottery could be Change on traditions and a lesson could be that there are ways of keep a tradition going without being so cruel or harsh. In the Whacking Day the main theme could be the ignorance of people in their own traditions and a lesson could be that people must have a justified reason to keep and practice a tradition.
